Mercadel is a cute town near the El Toro Mountain. Its location in the middle of the island, makes it an obliged stop to visit the northern coves and a great middle point to see the rest of the island. It is known for its traditional pastry and for its typical Minorcan cuisine.
Mercadel goes back to the 13th century when, after being conquered by Alfonso III of Aragón in 1287, a Gerundese group settled near Toro Mountain. There they built a parish where the village grew. This village, as well as Ciutadella and Mahón, participate in a market each Thursday.
On top of Toro Mountain the Mare de Deu del Toro sanctuary can be visited. It remains open everyday for visitors, where the wood-carved image of the Toro Virgin can be contemplated; she is the patron of the Minorquins. Being the highest point of the island, on a clear day we can delight in a panoramic view of all Minorca.
